This is a Bible lesson from the Power Tool Box Metro cirriculum. Luke 1 The Birth of John the Baptist The Bible introduces us to a priest named Zechariah in the first chapter of Luke. He and his wife were very old. One day while Zechariah was in the temple, he saw an angel. The angel told him that, even though he and his wife were old, they were going to have a baby. This wasn’t going to be a typical son. He was going to be special. He was going to be like the prophet Elijah who called fire from heaven. As the child grew, he would help many people return to God. He would get people ready for the coming of the Lord Jesus. But guess what happened? Zechariah didn’t believe the angel. He didn’t think God would be able to do what the angel was saying because he was so old. So the angel told Zechariah that he wouldn’t be able to speak until John was born. Zechariah’s voice would be silenced. Well, when Zechariah came out of the temple, sure enough, he wasn’t able to say a word. Zechariah’s voice was silenced. Can you imagine? He could not speak. He learned his lesson, didn’t he? After that, he submitted to God in everything; Zechariah now listened. Zechariah’s son, John, was born, and he took special care in raising the promised son. From the time John was born, Zechariah taught his son to obey God in everything. The central point is important–obedience! John, who came to be known as John the Baptist, was raised by a father who had learned to obey and who made a special point of teaching his son to obey. Because Zechariah learned to obey, John learned to obey. As you look at the life of John the Baptist, you will see that he always obeyed God. He did what God wanted rather than what he wanted for himself. John the Baptist was one of the greatest men who ever lived, because he did what God wanted and not what he himself wanted. |
