This is a Bible Lesson from the old Power Tool Box Metro cirriculum.

Genesis 19

A Promise and a Pathway

Props: Two pieces of posterboard.

Preparation: Make two posterboard signs. Print “Promise” on one and print “Pathway” on the other.

Procedure: Explain that God always gives us His promise for life, and when we need help, He provides a pathway.

Last week we learned how Abraham and Lot fought and then went their separate ways. Now we will go forward to discover the events that followed.

In Genesis 19 we find two angels of the Lord entering Sodom. The Lord had told Abraham that there were so many sinful people in the city of Sodom that it would have to be destroyed. God also promised that he would not destroy it if ten righteous people could be found, ten who would ask for help and be saved.

(Hold up the “Promise” sign and explain that God had made a promise.)

As soon as the angels came to Sodom, they found Lot. Lot and his family cried out to God. Throughout the night the angels were searching for anyone who loved God and who wanted to be saved. The angels completed their search, and the only ones that could be found were Lot and his family.

The Bible says that God rained down fire from the sky because the people there were so wicked. This is not easy to understand, but it’s important that we do realize that sin without forgiveness ends in death. God always gives us a pathway out of sin. (Hold up the “Pathway” sign.)

Now, did those people who lived in Sodom have to die? No. They only had to do one thing to be saved. What was it? Ask God for help. There was a pathway out of their sinful life, but they chose not to take it.

What about today? Do people have to die for their sins? No! First they need God’s promise–the promise through His Son Jesus. Then, they need to call on Him for help. That is the pathway.
